The NSW Labor government is managing to project a surplus next financial year, despite complaining about the state of the finances it inherited. While the budget is not full of sweeteners, it is hardly a bitter pill.
But it may have been a case of "the lady doth protest too much", because Tuesday's budget contained a surprise projected surplus of $844 million next financial year, and the cuts were not as deep or wide-ranging as the public had been led to believe.
There are still some cuts which will affect people's hip pockets directly, such as scrapping electric vehicles subsidies and means-testing Active and Creative Kids vouchers. But overall it's minimised the pain for punters, helped along by better-than-expected stamp duty and payroll tax revenue.
