NSW Opposition Leader Chris Minns has unveiled Labor's plans to overhaul the state's demerit points system arguing there needs to be a 'new approach' to make the roads safer.

Under the state's existing system, demerit points stay on a driver's record for three years from the time an offence is committed before becoming inactive. But after a number of deaths already recorded this holiday period, we need a new approach," Mr Minns said. "It's time we put safety back at the centre of our road rules, not revenue raising. Under the Labor the rules are simple - drive safely, get a point back."
