Houston Rockets point guard Chris Paul, a longtime bowler, has run an annual celebrity event with the Professional Bowlers Association for the past decade.
Houston Rockets' Chris Paul, left, lays up a shot past Golden State Warriors' DeMarcus Cousins, center, in the first half of an NBA basketball game Saturday, Feb. 23, 2019, in Oakland, Calif. Chris Paul didn’t start off the NBA season as he would have liked. The Houston Rockets point guard missed 17 consecutive games due to a strained left hamstring before returning to the lineup last month.
“There are a ton of people who don’t even say anything to me about basketball,” Paul said on the Fox telecast. “They come up to me and they’re like, ‘Hey, you bowl. We should go bowling.’” When Clark took a job at the PBA in 2008, he pitched the idea to televise the event. His bosses and ESPN executives agreed, and thus the CP3 PBA Celebrity Invitational was born. That first year, LeBron James teamed with PBA bowler Jason Couch to win.
“The Chris Paul show always delivers the best younger demographics for us of any show we do,” said Clark, who has been the PBA’s chief executive and commissioner since 2013. “You end up with a lot of people watching that normally would not watch bowling.” Weber proceeded to roll a nine to clinch the victory and advance to the finals. But the Weber-Owens team lost the championship match to PBA veteran Tommy Jones and Boston Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts, the reigning American League Most Valuable Player.
