A fiction disclaimer should really say ‘no character in this book is someone you can recognise’.

The author blurb that has accompanied my latest book reads, “While some find Lucy’s memoir hard to believe,is her first work of fiction.” Ha! I wrote that myself. I’ve published three books in three genres – a childbirth guide for men, my memoir and now a novel. All three are based on truth. All three with varying ratios of fact to fiction.

The obligatory imprint page states that this novel is a story, and the characters are fictitious. The place and time in which the story is set and the historical events before, during and after are real, but the characters involved are wholly imaginary.when every character ever written is based on the author’s experience and observation of real humans and real places unless it is pure fantasy genre, but even that is grounded in the real.

Here’s a good example of how a little truth is the perfect seed for fictional story. Last week, I was invited by a man 15 years my junior to meet him on a hot summer’s night for ‘an ice cream and a stroll’. Hot, hot. What an offer. An hour later, as I walked down the middle of the street towards the pin-drop location he’d messaged me, he was walking towards me with an ice cream in each hand and a very handsome grin on his face. He was barefoot and his clean, white T shirt fitted him perfectly.
