Savanna burning carbon credits transformed how Indigenous rangers care for their country in northern Australia. Could the carbon market help tackle their next big threat — feral buffalo?
"Ten to 15 years ago, unmanaged fire was probably a bigger issue to the environment here [than feral animals]," Mr Nagle said.
The ecosystems are significant carbon sinks, able to store "two to four times more carbon per hectare and sequester it 30-50 times faster than terrestrial forests", according to the federal government. "Now we have around five coordinators and 35 ranger positions and we support another 25 to 30 Indigenous experts that support us in all of our work."
"It's about how do we replace the economy of buffalo and maintain some of the work and jobs that were in the [mustering] industry, at the same time as generating a sort of dollar value," he said.
