What do you think of the upcoming permitless carry law?

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Law enforcement officers in Northeast Ohio -- longtime supporters of the Second Amendment -- say they fear the effects of a law that allows people to carry concealed weapons without a permit or training.

Ohio becomes the 23rd state in the nation that allows people to carry concealed weapons without a permit. The start date arrives weeks after mass shootings in Texas and New York killed 31 people, including 19 children. Mahoning County Sheriff Jerry Greene said he has long supported the rights of gun owners. He said, however, that the recent legislation “complicates things for law enforcement.”

The Ohio Fraternal Order of Police fought the new law. Its lobbyist, Michael Weinman, a retired Columbus police officer, cited the lack of training as a key element. “I’m very fearful,” Polensek said. “I expect more people to be carrying guns, more people to use firearms when they shouldn’t be using them like during altercations and episodes of road rage, things like that.”

Rob Sexton, a lobbyist for the Buckeye Firearms Association, also testified in favor of the bill, stressing that law abiding citizens only want to protect themselves.
