But after re-signing Shepard and adding Jeff Smith from the Jets, they secured Slayton with a two-year deal that includes enough guaranteed money — $4.9 million — to indicate he is firmly in Daboll’s plans as a pass-catcher.
NFL teams adore drafting players from the Buckeyes program, and the talent pool this year is up to its customary standard. Quarterback C.J. Stroud could be the first player off the board, and many more of his teammates will follow him into the professional ranks. There is much to like about Smith-Njigba’s on-field production. In 2021, he set a school record with 1,606 receiving yards and a Rose Bowl record with 347 receiving yards. His 2022 season was a downer. A hamstring injury limited him to only three games.
It is a risk because the pick they gave up — 100th overall in the 2023 NFL Draft — is a valuable asset.
