Legendary coach, EdEyestone helped guide jwardy21 to Olympic success and the BYU men’s cross-country team to its first NCAA title.
. He couldn’t help but imagine all of the runners in the field who had run faster than his career best. But that anxiety shifted into excitement when Eyestone shared a prediction with Ward at practice one day.
“He said, ‘Jared, I think you can be top 10 at the Olympics,’” Ward said. He imagined the runners who were supposed to beat him, while also taking into account that as long as he reached the starting line fit and healthy, there was a strong chance that at least some of his competitors wouldn’t be at the top of their game at the same time.
“I played the numbers game and I thought, you know what, I think I could be top 10, and that goal was exciting,” he said.a few days before the Olympic marathon, Eyestone shared a stretch goal. He told Ward that on a perfect day, he could finish top six in Rio. “Coach gets realistic enough that when he says, ‘I think you can be top six,’ I believe that,” Ward said. “I really believe that he believes that I can do that. He doesn’t just throw things out there if he doesn’t really believe they are possible.”
On February 29, eight of Eyestone’s athletes will be put to the test at the Trials. For some, it will be the first time they’ve competed at the national championship. For others, like Ward, the race will be a chance to improve on his previous Olympic marathon success.
