Martín Maldonado picked up Vázquez on Tuesday morning and took his new catching partner around every crevice of Minute Maid Park.
Boston had received all of Vázquez’s attention for the past seven years. One manic Monday redirected his priorities and that of so many others across the sport. Perhaps nowhere is it more apparent than Houston. “I was getting out to see the guys a last time and be with them a last time,” Vázquez said Tuesday. “It was a tough day yesterday for me and my family. It was a busy one. It’s a new chapter in my book. I’m going to miss all those guys there.”
Doing so immediately is not logical. Vázquez’s next week or so is better served playing sporadically while studying the new, 14-man pitching staff he inherited Monday night. He’s played against the Astros and faced their pitching staff as a hitter, but neither is comparable to catching them.
