Did you know that sea turtles can grow as big as cars?
According to Kuya Kim's report on "24 Oras," Thursday, the largest living sea turtle recorded is a leatherback sea turtle that measures 10 feet long.
Prehistoric sea turtles are even bigger—the Archelon ischyros that lived 70 million to 80 million years ago can grow up to 15 feet. Another huge sea turtle fossil was found in the Pyrenees Mountains in Spain—Leviathanochelys aenigmatica that measures 12 feet long and considered the biggest marine turtle in Europe.Meanwhile in the Philippines, a carcass of a leatherback sea turtle recently washed ashore in Silago, Southern Leyte. The creature measured seven feet long and 90 cm wide.
According to authorities, possible cause of death is the fishing net wrapped around the turtle's neck. Sea turtles are endangered species. Kuya Kim said it is important to protect them because they play a crucial role in helping the coral reef ecosystem and distributing nutrients around the seas.
