In 1993, the Brazilian F1 driver took to the track in horrendous weather conditions - and turned in an iconic run dubbed “the lap of the gods”.

T hirty years ago this month, the triple world champion Ayrton Senna produced what many regard as the greatest opening lap of Formula 1 history.

The scene was the 1993 European Grand Prix at Donington Park, England, and the weather conditions were appalling. Senna started fourth on the grid in an underpowered McLaren-Ford.The Brazilian was out-dragged off the line and fell to fifth, but then used his uncanny wet weather skills to carve through the field. Senna was taking such different lines to everyone else on the greasy, treacherous track, that on occasion it looked like he’d completely overshot corners and was heading for the grass.

Yet Senna stayed on the black stuff and picked off the front-runners one by one, finally overtaking his arch rival, Frenchman Alain Prost, to grab the lead before the first lap was over. Senna went on to win that race, and that opening “lap of the gods” passed into legend.Donington Historic Festival Senna would win only three more Grands Prix before tragedy struck. In 1994, he was leading the San Marino Grand Prix at Imola, Italy, when his Williams-Renault left the track and hit a barrier at more than 200 km/h. He died of his injuries.

At the end of this month, the Donington Historic Festival will pay tribute to Ayrton Senna’s 1993 feat with demos on the circuit using F1 cars once driven by Senna and Michael Schumacher.. Director Asif Kapadia said leaving it out was just one of many agonising choices required when shaping a documentary.soon after the film was released. “The shots are really bad and also we have to consider the story line.
