Gold, sheep, now beef cattle — Rockhampton has a varied history. But it's an event held every three years that has secured Rockhampton its spot as the beef capital of Australia.

Since its inception, the expo has grown to become the premier showcase of the Australian beef industry.

"It wasn't until a few years later that gold was discovered. First at Calliope and then also down around Cawarral and Mount Chalmers in that area and to the west of Rockhampton."This brought big populations to the district. And of course, they had to be fed, and so there was quite a heavy demand for beef."

"We have two million head of cattle within a 400-kilometre radius of Rockhampton, so it's a densely populated area for cattle."The bull statues dotted around Rockhampton, and the care taken to preserve their crown jewels, give some insight into how much the industry has come to mean to the region. "I believe we're all part of the beef industry. If we consume beef, we're part of the beef industry."Jenny Growther has a special connection to the agricultural sector, with her father and grandfather heavily involved in introducing brahman cattle to Queensland herds.

"Since 1988, this event has grown to become the premier showcase of the Australian beef industry that draws attention not just here but across the globe," Mr Irwin said.
