The murder of 15-year-old Jordan Edwards bisected Balch Springs into before and after April 29, 2017.
Since the 2000 census, the city’s Black population increased by 75%, while its non-Hispanic white population has fallen by half. Today, 85% of the city’s 27,000 residents are people of color. Lee said in the initial months after Jordan’s death, he saw promise in the way people who had never met the Edwards family “went above and beyond to make them feel supported and seen.”
Jordan, one of four children, was described by those who knew him as outgoing, enthusiastic, polite and smart. He was an honor-roll student who didn’t shy from reading the Bible in school. He went by the nickname “Smiley,” for smiling wide and often. He dreamed of playing football for his favorite college team, the University of Alabama.
