“When we started this whole council a couple of years back, we brought [mumbo sauce] to the table. It was definitely something that was always on McDonald’s radar with the DMV area being a very, very strong market for them,” Grant says. For McDonald’s, the team wanted to create a sauce that was sweet and vinegary with a little spice at the end. They also had to make sure it was an actual dipping-style sauce:
Grant says McDonald’s made an effort to use products from Black-owned producers and distributors to create the sauce, and a Black-owned, woman-led packer based out of Chicago helped create and troubleshoot the end product.
