People brave the cold and rainy weather to stock up on insulation for pipes in preparation for the dropping temperature on Monday, Dec. 19, 2022 at Cox Hardware and Lumber in Houston.Although the 2021 storm that is linked to 200 deaths still rings in Texans’ minds, meteorologists stressed that this storm would be different. There is no rain or snow predicted in the coming days, said National Weather Service meteorologist Dan Reilly.
That afternoon, people clustered outside the George R. Brown Convention Center, chatting and smoking cigarettes. Some were unhoused; others had a home.One Houston resident, Darryl Carter, said he has a home with functioning electricity and heat but felt safer at the convention center. Carter, who doesn’t own a generator, said an electrical fire started in his house during the last freeze.Outside the convention center, a group of three handed out bagged meals and blankets.
Lakewood Church opened the doors to its warming center just before 5 p.m. as temperatures began to drop into the 40s. About 15 people, including a family with young children, were already waiting outside the church doors. Like the city, the church provided seats and snacks but wasn’t planning to provide full meals or sleeping accommodations, church officials said. Lakewood planned to keep its doors open all of Thursday night in case conditions deteriorated.
As he finished his own preparations, Garcia said he’d begun hearing from his neighbors about last-minute attempts to winterize pipes and protect their homes. Some had resorted to using old Amazon boxes and Crown Royal koozies to wrap pipes and keep plants warm.
