More than 400 years after his death, the Bard’s aura is still so pervasive it’s a bit sobering to realize that live Shakespeare in Houston is a rarity. It’s been worse lately because HSF has been dormant since 2019; after 2020 was a wash, last summer a COVID-conscious Shakespeare Film Festival stood in for its live productions.
As the professional arm of UH’s School of Theater and Dance, the festival straddles two worlds, welcoming both enrolled students and working alumni with multiple years of professional experience. It’s the sort of hands-on training that can pay dividends years down the line, as former students return to pass on what they’ve learned.
“Actually [‘Lear’] took on some really strong resonance, given the different perspective on what hardship is about and the hardship that's there,” says Young. “Not everybody makes it through; and that's real, and we all need to take a moment for the costs that puts on us.
