Not only does it keep mattresses and furniture out of landfills, the furniture bank can give them new life with a new family that likely has nothing.
Some 750,000 used mattresses go into landfills in the Houston area each year, and furniture bank executive director Oli Mohammed hopes people will instead bring them to the furniture bank's 8220 Mosley Road location not far from Hobby Airport from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 21-22. Drop-off of two mattresses is free; anything more than that is $20 per mattress.
Mattresses that are stained or damaged will be taken apart and recycled. Those in better condition are cleaned and sanitized, then bagged and given away to families in need, including as part of the No Kids on the Floor program. Most in need are good twin or queen-size mattresses. "This community is wealthy and resilient. Just by recycling mattresses — 750,000 go into landfills each year — we could take care of the problem of children sleeping on the floor. It is doable," Mohammed said. When: 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday-Saturday, April 21-22
