Leaving the company where they built their careers wasn’t easy, but it was necessary, Sisk says. She and O’Connell felt they were getting a little too comfortable artistically in Utah. She and O’Connell performed Welch’s ‘Madame Butterfly’ in Salt Lake City in 2016 and loved its challenges. Welch also admired what he saw in them. “Not only are they good dancers — that’s a given,” he says, but like the rest of the Houston company, “they have such a hunger and a hardworking quality.”
A native of Longview, Sisk went to Philadelphia’s Rock School, then signed on with Ballet West at 17. Four years later, Washington Post critic Sarah Kaufman pronounced her “quite a special dancer,” noticing that as the Sugar Plum Fairy, Sisk “made an instant connection with the audience and deepened it with a refined, elastic quality of great authority and ease.”
Their chemistry did not go unnoticed. Ballet West artistic director Adam Sklute often paired Sisk and O’Connell onstage, and Pointe Magazine called their 2019 performance in Cranko’s challenging, emotive “Onegin” a standout of the year.
