Houston Ballet Soloists Mackenzie Ritcher and Harper Watters with Artists of Houston Ballet in Stanton Welch’s"Divergence."Houston Ballet plans to close its 2022-23 season on a local note."Divergence," playing at Wortham Theater Center May 25 through June 4, is one of three ballets from choreographers Aszure Barton, Stanton Welch and Justin Peck that pays special homage to Space City.
"Angular Momentum" pairs a Houston-inspired set with a hybrid orchestral-electronic score by Mason Bates. And what's more, the music will be punctuated by archival audio from NASA. It returns to the stage alongside Welch's"Divergence." A world premiere from Tony Award-winner Peck closes out the show, and season."Under the Folding Sky" becomes his sophomore commission for Houston Ballet. The work is inspired by James Turrell's"Twilight Epiphany" skyspace at the Suzanne Deal Booth Centennial Pavilion at Rice University. An operatic score from"The Photographer," by composer Philip Glass, completes the scene.
Reid Bartelme and Harriet Jung of Reid & Harriet collaborated on costume design, while Brandon Stirling Baker finessed the light scheme. Look for scenic design by Rice alum Karl Jensen and performances from the full company.Wortham Theater Center, 501 Texas
