The high-stakes race for House speaker enters a new phase this week, with a slate of new candidates vying for the gavel following Rep. Jim Jordan's exit from the race.Republicans picked Rep. Tom Emmer as their nominee for House speaker Tuesday afternoon.
He received 117 votes in the final round. But more than 100 Republicans voted against, either backing Louisiana Rep. Mike Johnson, who received 97 votes, or casting a ballot for someone else. There were previously nine candidates vying for the job after the conference rejected Rep. Jim Jordan's bid for speaker last week.
Rep. Gary Palmer dropped out of the speaker race on Tuesday morning, stating "if withdrawing my name can help expedite that process even a little, then I will gladly step aside."
