House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will address her future plans Thursday, amid speculation over whether she will continue to hold a Democratic leadership role.
“The Speaker has been overwhelmed by calls from colleagues, friends and supporters,” Pelosi’s spokesman, Drew Hammill said in a statement Wednesday night. “This evening, the Speaker monitored returns in the three remaining critical states. The Speaker plans to address her future plans tomorrow to her colleagues. Stay tuned.”
Pelosi, 82, a California Democrat, won re-election last week but will lose her post as House Speaker, after Republicans clinched a House majority Wednesday. Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., is the front-runner to become the new Speaker. Pelosi became the first female Speaker of the House in 2007. When she became Speaker again in 2019, she said it would be her last term in leadership. But some House Democrats have reportedly been urging her to seek another term as their leader.
Last week, Pelosi said family issues will be key in her future plans. Her husband, Paul Pelosi, was attacked by an intruder in their San Francisco home last month and faces a long recovery from his injuries.
