Newly elected House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., met with President Joe Biden at the White House on Thursday as he attended a bipartisan briefing on the administration's request to Congress for additional funding on national security. Biden came to the Situation Room ahead of the briefing and met with Johnson and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., according to a White House official.
” It was Johnson's first White House meeting in his new role. Johnson was elected speaker on Wednesday — three weeks after Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., was ousted from the position. Biden congratulated Johnson after his election on Wednesday, pledging that he would seek to work with the new speaker “in good faith.” “Even though we have real disagreements about important issues, there should be mutual effort to find common ground wherever we can,” the president said.
