A new virus, HMPV, is causing a surge in cases in China, leading to hospitals being overwhelmed with patients. The situation is reminiscent of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, with long queues in paediatric wards and crowded infusion rooms.

Recently, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in China revealed that cases of ANOTHER virus with symptoms similar to COVID-19 are on the rise in the country – the HMPV , also known as the Human Metapneumovirus. This comes merely weeks after the Chinese government announced the outbreak of the Norovirus. Now, the SARS‑CoV‑2 (COVID-19) X page shared that hospitals in China are being overwhelmed with patients who have apparently contracted the latest virus, HMPV .

They wrote, “Hospitals in China are overwhelmed by a severe “flu” outbreak, including Influenza A and HMPV, which resembles the 2020 COVID-19 surge.” They also said that both paediatric and adult departments in Chinese hospitals are becoming full as the virus is starting to spread among young and elderly patients. “Some videos show long queues in paediatric wards late at night, with parents arriving early to secure treatment. The infusion rooms are also crowded,” they added. The page went on to explain that a blogger had attended a small gathering in Guangzhou, China, only for the attendees to later display symptoms of the virus. “On December 25 (Wednesday), video blogger ‘Please Fei Ge‘ shared that he and his wife recently attended an event in Guangzhou. After returning, both developed symptoms of high fevers, body aches, and headaches, similar to the symptoms they experienced when infected with COVID-19. “They later discovered that all 8 or 9 attendees of the event had contracted ‘A-type influenza’. To prevent infecting their children, the couple has been in isolation for 3 days, only to still experience low-grade fevers,” they shared.
