Hope Street | Amara Karan: 'I hope the audience enjoys the warmth and wit'
- English Detective Constable Leila Hussain, played by Amara Karan , becomes the first Muslim police officer to join the force of the fictional town, Port Devine on the Northern Ireland coast. Each of the ten episodes features its own self-contained crime investigation; the series also follows the police officers as they deal with everyday issues in the beautiful coastal town.
"From the outset, we were determined that the series shouldn't be about the Troubles or serial killers, but should capture the warmth, good humour and resilience of people from Northern Ireland," said executive producer Paul Marquess. In this Q&A, Karan tells us more about her role, filming in Northern Ireland and what she hopes the audience takes from this drama. The money!! Haha...just kidding. I loved that this character is in a compromised situation in terms of her personal safety from the outset. So she has to assimilate, hide, duck and dive personal questions, and yet she sticks out in her new environment like a sore thumb.None! The wonderful writers did the work for me.
It was so fun because the people in Donaghadee were so proud of their town and went out of their way to make us feel welcome. And many were heavily involved in the show, like Brian, who runs the sailing club. It's a magical spot on the Irish Sea, which is very cold but can be extremely calm like a lake. You can see different weather systems in the distance over England, Scotland and the Isle of Man and enjoy rainbows on the horizon.
