Police chief Chris Tang says explosives have been discovered since anti-government protests began. FMTNews

HONG KONG: Hong Kong, grappling months of sometimes violent anti-government unrest, is to spend about HK$500 million on police protective equipment, including six armoured vehicles, to help combat the threat of “local terrorism”.

The figure includes a planned upgrade in protective gear of HK$10,000 for each of its 28,000 frontline officers. “I think we have to face the reality that there is a new normal. The new normal is that things cannot go back to one year ago.” The weekend arrests took the total since June to more than 7,500, Tang said. Around 40% of those were students, of which 60% were from universities and 40% from secondary schools.
