Hong Kong police have arrested 13 individuals in connection with a syndicate suspected of selling counterfeit concert tickets. The operation resulted from investigations into a case where a victim lost HK$640,000 attempting to purchase 544 non-existent tickets for a Cantopop concert.

Hong Kong police have arrested 13 people in a crackdown on a syndicate that allegedly sold counterfeit concert tickets. A victim lost HK$640,000 (US$82,200) in a single case after attempting to purchase 544 non-existent tickets for Cantopop superstar Andy Lau Tak-wah's concerts. Police investigations revealed that the fraudsters had been operating since October last year.

They manipulated multiple online shopping platform accounts and posed as legitimate sellers offering tickets for upcoming concerts, including the Clockenflap music festival at Central Harbourfront and Lau's concerts at the Hong Kong Coliseum. The scammers charged prices higher than official ticket prices and instructed interested individuals to transfer money to dummy bank accounts. After receiving payment, the criminals would cease all communication. The highest individual loss occurred when a victim purchased 544 tickets for Lau's concert, resulting in a HK$640,000 loss when the scammer disappeared after receiving the payment. Before this week's crackdown, Hong Kong had already arrested five other men for selling counterfeit tickets to Andy Lau's concerts. Police launched operations across the city on Wednesday and Thursday, arresting seven men and six women aged 19 to 56. The charges include conspiracy to defraud, obtaining property by deception, and money laundering. The arrested individuals included three masterminds: a 28-year-old construction worker, a 26-year-old unemployed man, and a 41-year-old housewife, who controlled the online shopping platform accounts. Officers also discovered that the dummy accounts were used to launder over HK$22 million in suspected crime proceeds. All suspects remain detained, and their connections are still under investigation. Police urge the public to buy event tickets only through official channels and from reputable sellers when shopping online. They also advise completing transactions in person whenever possible
