Virus daripada tikus jalanan ini digelar hepatitis E tikus atau HEV tikus mula menyerang penduduk Hong Kong.
Menurut salah seorang penyelidik University of Hong Kong, Dr Siddharth Sridjar, ancaman virus misteri ini disebarkan dari tikus jalanan kepada manusia. Sejak kes pertama melibatkan pesakit berusia 58 tahun yang menjalani pemindahan hati kira-kira 2 tahun lalu, seramai 10 lagi penduduk di bandar raya terbabit disahkan positif hepatitis E tikus juga digelar HEV tikus.
“Mungkin terdapat ratusan lagi jangkitan yang gagal dikesan di luar sana. Bagaimana ia tersebar kepada manusia masih jadi misteri. Sama ada melalui makanan tercemar atau melibatkan haiwan lain. Kami masih belum temui jawapan,” ujar Sridhar.
