Honda has unveiled a demonstration facility in Japan for the production of solid-state batteries , slated to begin operation in January 2025. The demo facility's production line, located in Sakura City, Tochigi Prefecture, is designed to replicate the processes needed for mass production of solid-state batteries and spans approximately 295,000 square feet.
Equipped with facilities and equipment that enable the verification of each production process, from weighing and mixing electrode materials to coating, roll pressing of electrode assembly, cell formation, and module assembly, this facility will be instrumental in determining the basic specifications for mass-produced battery cells. Honda is developing solid-state batteries independently, and the demo facility will play a crucial role in this endeavor. The production process for solid-state batteries differs significantly from that of conventional lithium-ion batteries due to the use of dry conductive materials instead of liquid electrolytes. This necessitates fine-tuning to reduce cost and production time. Honda highlights a unique roll-pressing technique used to increase the density of solid electrolyte layers, enabling continuous pressing. Furthermore, by streamlining and accelerating assembly processes, including the bonding of positive and negative electrodes, Honda aims to significantly reduce the production time per cell. The facility houses full-scale equipment spread across three buildings, dedicated to cathode formation and cell assembly, anode formation, electrolyte activation, and module assembly. Solid-state batteries promise higher energy density and longer lifespans, paving the way for more affordable electric vehicles (EVs)
