A what now?
As former FCEV drivers, we see several advantages. There was
at least one occasion when broken hydrogen stations and low fuel forced us to park the Mirai for several days ; the ability to plug it in would have kept us on the move . We often lamented that the Mirai's small battery meant it couldn't store much energy from regenerative braking in mountain driving. And our experience with gasoline PHEVs clues us in to what may be the plug-in FCEV's biggest advantage: If the hydrogen CR-V has a decent battery-only range, drivers who plug in nightly and whose daily driving requirements encompass a limited radius might need scarcely any hydrogen at all.
Of course, we're also a bit dismayed, because the use of a hydrogen fuel cell renders the electric Honda CR-V useless for most Americans. Of the fifty-odd, all but one are in California . While the idea of a plug-in FCEV CR-V will no doubt appeal to Californians frustrated with their Claritys, Mirais, and Nexos, it's not going to do much to forward the march of EVs across the nation, let alone hydrogen fuel cell options.
We asked Honda's executives if they had any plans to help expand the national hydrogen fueling network, and got a non-answer in return. The CR-V will be built at
