The man who helped Vicky White and Casey White rent an Indiana motel room didn't know they were on the run, according to law enforcement.
reported that Shawn Eugene Gardner, 51, took $100 cash from the couple, who were not related, in exchange for showing his driver’s license to allow the two to secure a room at Motel 41 on U.S. 41 on Evansville.The pair fled Motel 41 on May 9 when they were cornered about two miles away by law enforcement vehicles in a ditch.
The two had been on the run since April 29 when Vicky White walked with Casey Cole White out of the Lauderdale County Jail and never returned, sparking a nationwide manhunt. Vanderburgh County Sheriff Dave Wedding said Gardner’s name was taken from the motel register, but he was not arrested, as he had not committed a crime.Gardner is being held in the Vanderburgh County jail on $500 bond on unrelated drug charges.
The paper reported that Gardner pleaded guilty to the attempted rape of an 80-year-old Evansville woman in her home in 2003. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison with credit for 150 days served, according to court records.Wedding said last week the two needed help to get a room, as Casey White had no identification in order to check in. However, there was no evidence the two had any accomplices, relatives or friends in the area, he said.
