This may be the biggest college admissions scandal in U.S. history.
According to the unsealed court documents, the allegations include, among others:bribing coaches and administrators to designate applicants as recruited athletes to gain admission to colleges and universities;having third parties take classes and exams in place of their children and submitting the earned grade as part of the students' college applications;
According to Justice Department officials, the most frequent form of fraudulent activities included cheating on SAT or ACT exams, or using connections with Division I coaches to offer fake athletic credentials to gain admission. Some parents allegedly took advantage of one of these activities, while others took advantage of both.
The indictments also allege that Huffman"made a purported charitable contribution of $15,000" that was used"to participate in the college entrance exam cheating scheme on behalf of her eldest daughter." In some cases, Singer allegedly had a third party take, or change answers to, the SAT or ACT exams for students, or Singer would conspire with athletic coaches to fake athletic credentials for non-athletic recruits to help them gain admission to college. Singer was charged with racketeering conspiracy, money laundering conspiracy and obstruction of justice. Singer already has agreed to plead guilty to racketeering and other charges via a plea agreement.
