Water gushed all day Tuesday from the 16-inch main break at Observer Highway and Madison Street as crews from Veolia scrambled to isolate the second of two mains that need repair.

Work to repair Hoboken water main break continues, Feb. 28, 2023Schools were closed. Businesses and municipal buildings were shuttered. Even the local hospital was evacuated.

“It turns out that where the rupture occurred is an ‘interconnect,’ so there are two mains feeding it,” Veolia spokesman Christopher Halleron said at 3 p.m. Tuesday, citing how difficult it was to located the second main. Halleron and PSE&G officials said the issue lies in the accurate mapping of the intricate underground system of pipes.

Late Tuesday afternoon, CarePoint Health officials announced they were evacuating patients from Hoboken University Medical Center to Christ Hospital and Bayonne Medical Center — “to ensure optimal safety for patients and staff in the hospital” — until the water was restored at full pressure. “We are monitoring the situation closely and are aware that many businesses have modified operations but are open,” said Roxanne Earley, the executive director of the Hoboken Business Alliance. “Customers should check social media or call ahead to confirm directly with businesses their status. ... We understand how frustrating and difficult this is for our business owners, their staff, and customers.
