The City Council at its Sept. 20 meeting cancelled its regularly scheduled meeting for October 18 and instead has invited the public to attend the naming ceremony for the Third Street bridge at 5 p.m. that day. The City will name the bridge for Mayor Brian Snedecor, whose final term in the office concludes at the end of December.
The bridge was “on his agenda from Day 1,” Councilman Dave Vinzant, D-4, said, and there were a million reasons not to do it, mainly money. But the project was a high priority since the bridge was shown to be the second most-restrictive bridge in the Deep River system, according to the Hobart Improvements website.
The project “will replace the existing structure with multiple precast concrete culverts that in total will nearly double the span of the bridge while increasing the clearance by nearly five feet, allowing boaters improved access to the lake,” according to the website. And through Snedecor’s leadership, the city was able to complete the project without ever taking out any bonds, Vinzant said.
In other business, the council voted 7-0 upon first reading to approve the city’s 2024 budget after no remonstrators came forward during the public hearing. The budget to be submitted is $60. 352,192 and, if approved, will have a levy of 1.5% and include the repayment of the Southlake Mall bond, Long said previously.Michelle L.
