Malaysia reports an increase in cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) in 2024, with 327 confirmed cases compared to 225 in 2023. While not a new disease, the rise in cases mirrors a similar trend in China and other Asian countries, raising public health concerns. Although the situation in China is described as severe, there is no official declaration of an emergency.

Katanya, HMPV adalah satu jangkitan saluran pernafasan disebabkan virus dalam keluarga Pneumoviridae dan sudah lama berada di dalam negara. “Jangkitan saluran pernafasan akan terus wujud dalam komuniti dan kita perlu sentiasa berwaspada menghadapinya. Orang ramai dinasihatkan agar proaktif menjaga kesihatan diri serta mencegah jangkitannya kepada orang lain terutamanya di kawasan yang tertutup dan sesak,” katanya dalam kenyataan.
Pusat Kawalan dan Pencegahan Penyakit China mengesahkan HPMV merebak ke seluruh wilayah utara negara itu yang kini menjadi lokasi paling teruk terjejas oleh virus tersebut.
