Helen Ting acknowledges that textbooks have become more inclusive, while economist Jomo Kwame Sundaram urges caution in relying on official or biased sources as they could distort public understanding.
Helen Ting and Jomo Kwame Sundaram with other panel members at a book launch in Petaling Jaya today. PETALING JAYA: History textbooks, though improved in recent years, still fall short in teaching students to think critically about how history is constructed, says a policy researcher.
The panel discussion was held at the launch of the second edition of “Merdeka! British Rule and the Struggle for Independence in Malaya 1945-1957” by HELP University pro-chancellor Khong Kim Hoong. Ting said earlier textbooks were too focused on the Malay narrative, and said government-funded textbooks have historically played down the contributions of early Malay leftist movements.
