Purdue's Carsen Edwards put up historic numbers against UVA
CLOSE SportsPulse: Virginia is headed to their first Final Four since 1984 after being Purdue in an overtime thriller on Saturday night. USA TODAY Sports' Scott Gleeson breaks it all down. USA TODAY
After producing the best four-game NCAA tournament run by passing Davidson’s Stephen Curry, who announced his greatness in 2008, and then scoring once more in overtime to give himself 42 points for the second time in three games, Edwards missed a go-ahead shot with eight seconds left in overtime and then threw the ball out of bounds trying to get it to Ryan Cline for a game-tying three-pointer in the final seconds.
Four seconds left now. Clark dribbles once, twice. Two seconds left, and he’s 40 feet from the basket. Clark finds Virginia big Mamadi Diakite, not a jump shooter, but Diakite caught the pass and buried a 14-footer at the buzzer to force overtime. The Purdue crowd — and this was a 95 percent Purdue crowd — was stunned silent.ROUGH ENDING: 'Bonehead' play on inbound helps sink No.
Edwards was either scoring, or missing but attracting so much attention that teammates were grabbing the offensive rebound and scoring. Nojel Eastern did it once, then Ryan Cline from the foul line after grabbing another Edwards miss. As good as Edwards was? Guy was that good, too, burying three-pointers from each corner, burying them from the key, burying one as he was falling out of bounds. Guy was 5-for-9 in the second half, and it was his two free throws with 5.8 seconds left in overtime that forced Purdue to get fancy.Hot as he was, Edwards came out of a timeout with a mandate to pass ahead to Cline, and the strategy makes sense.
And then came Saturday, when Purdue played well enough to reach its first Final Four and found itself a buzzer-beater by Diakite away from celebrating at an arena so pro-Purdue, lets call it Mackey Arena South.
