Protesters holds up “thumbs down” signs, and stand with their back to the front of the room as HISD Superintendent Mike Miles presented a slideshow to the board during the HISD board meeting at Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center on Thursday, June 22, 2023 in Houston. The Houston ISD Board of Managers unanimously voted Thursday to approve Superintendent Mike Miles' $2.
The budget is largely similar to the one proposed by former Superintendent Millard House II, with the difference being about $100 million in cuts to the district's central office and positions funded by pandemic relief dollars, along with a reduction in third-party contracts.
Neither House nor Miles' plans slashed budgets for individual schools. While he hasn't ruled out school closures or campus-level cuts in the future, Miles has said he wants to minimize disruptions to schools during his first year as much as possible. The superintendent also laid out his vision for his Destination 2035 initiative, which he said is aimed at closing achievement gaps and preparing students for the workforce in a world that will look radically different 12 years from now. He said the undertaking will require"wholesale systemic reform," noting that less than 20 percent of HISD fourth graders have been reading at grade level for nearly two decades, with lower levels for Black and Hispanic students.
"We have to work differently," Miles said."HISD cannot improve the system, has no chance of improving or changing that data, getting kids to read or preparing them for the year 2035, if we keep doing the same thing."Board member Audrey Momanaee smiles with Richmond Campo as they prepared for a closed session after voting on Mike Miles’ proposal during the HISD board meeting at Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center on Thursday, June 22, 2023 in Houston.
