Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrao, the Archbishop of Goa and Daman in western India, has opened an art exhibition honoring Saint Francis Xavier as part of the upcoming decennial exposition of the Jesuit missionary’s relics.A woman visits the art exhibition featuring works of Hindu and Christian artists on life and legacy of St. Francis Xavier in old Goa of western India on Nov. 17.
The artworks use various art mediums, perspectives, symbols, and motifs to convey the saint's life story and Goa’s rich, multi-faceted heritage. “The main idea behind this Exhibition is to send out the message that Goa must pursue communal harmony,” Cardinal Ferrao said. “This is how we expect Goan artists of various cultural and religious traditions to represent Goa in the public spaces.”
Cardinal Ferrao said the Church's patronage has consistently nurtured artistic innovation and the preservation of cultural heritage because the Church values every aesthetic effort that elevates society and the human soul. Cardinal Ferrao, felicitating the artists, said, “The Church needs your vision, your voice, and your expertise to preserve our great legacy of art and heritage. We require your creative talents, the passion of your heart, and the ideas of your mind to make this world a better place to live in.”
“This exhibition will inspire visitors to fortify respect for the religious and cultural diversity that marks Indian civilization,” Jesuit historian Father Delio Mendonca, former director of Xavier Center for Historical Research, Goa and curator of the exhibition, said.
