The Free Market Foundation has cited the country's high tax rates, among other issues, as diminishing the country's economic freedomIn the US, the highest individual tax rate is set at 37%, while the highest tax rate in South Africa is 45%. This heavy tax burden is, according to the Free Market Foundation, one of the reasons for South Africa's poor performance in the ranking for economic freedom.
South Africa is 94th out of 165 countries in the Fraser Institute's latest ranking on economic freedom.
