The Johor Baru High Court has scheduled January 14, 2024, to rule on a preliminary objection against a habeas corpus application filed by Datuk Nasiruddin Mohd Ali and his wife, Azura Md Yusof, who are challenging their detention under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012.

The High Court in Johor Baru has scheduled January 14, 2024, to deliver its ruling on a preliminary objection concerning a habeas corpus application filed by Datuk Nasiruddin Mohd Ali, the CEO of GISB Holdings Sdn Bhd, and his wife, Azura Md Yusof. Their detention under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 ( SOSMA 2012 ) is being challenged through this application.

Judge Abu Bakar Katar set the date after hearing arguments from both sides: the respondents' lawyers, led by Federal Counsel Mohamad Firdaus Sadani Ali, Mohd Zain Ibrahim, and Nur Syahidah Mohamad Kamil, argued that the application was a 'backdoor' attempt to secure the applicants' release via the legal system. Meanwhile, the applicants' legal team, headed by Datuk Rosli Kamaruddin and including Najib Zakaria, Boestamam Ahmad, Dorina Abdullah, Hasnan Hamzah, Zaim Rosli, Luqman Zainal, Schanni Feizal, and Zahier Rosli, presented their case. Two Malaysian Bar lawyers, R. Jayabalan and Khairul Azwad, also observed the proceedings to protect the public interest. Earlier, the judge dismissed the habeas corpus application of GISBH's Ikhwan Café Manager in Kluang, Mohamad Suhaimi Mohd Sani, 28, after his lawyers withdrew it. This followed Suhaimi's release on bail by the Kota Tinggi Sessions Court on October 30. Nasiruddin and Azura's habeas corpus application was initially heard on October 30. Both applicants named the Home Minister, the Inspector-General of Police, the Public Prosecutor, the Selangor and Kuala Lumpur Prison Directors, and the Government of Malaysia as respondents. On October 23, Nasiruddin, Azura, and Suhaimi were charged in the Selayang Sessions Court under Section 130V(1) of the Penal Code for being members of an organized criminal group.
