Victoria's electric vehicle tax has been ruled invalid by the High Court. Two electric vehicle owners from Melbourne have successfully argued the state government does not have the power to impose the charge. Under current arrangements, electric vehicle drivers receive an annual invoice.

However, the High Court has determined only the Commonwealth would have the power to impose the charge in line with the Constitution.
