The High Court in Kuala Lumpur has dismissed a judicial review application filed by the director and producer of the film ' Mentega Terbang ' against the ban on its screening and publicity. Judge Datuk Amarjeet Singh delivered the ruling, stating, 'This is the court’s decision; the application for judicial review is dismissed.
' Lawyer N Surendran, representing the film's director Mohd Khairianwar Jailani and producer Tan Meng Kheng, said the defense would appeal the decision to the Court of Appeal. Khairi Anwar and Tan had claimed that the government's decision to ban the movie was irrational and violated freedom of expression. They also argued that the ban affected their income as the film could not be screened or distributed in the country. The Home Ministry, citing the Film Censorship Act 2002 and the Film Censorship (Prohibition) Order 2023, banned the screening and publicity of 'Mentega Terbang' for allegedly portraying scenes that offended religious beliefs. The film, available on a video streaming platform, sparked public backlash and anger. On January 17, 2024, Mohd Khairianwar and Tan pleaded not guilty to charges of hurting religious feelings through the film in the Magistrate's Court
