This week, Tesla billionaire Elon Musk and musician Grimes announced the name of their newborn son as “X Æ A-12” to much internet fanfare, ridicule and head scratching—but here’s why the name the couple chose is likely to be rejected by the state of California. KEY FACTSPeopleThat’s because the state of California only lets you use the 26 characters of the English alphabet in legal baby names—no numbers, accents or pronunciation marks, emojis or special characters.
Until the baby has a valid birth certificate, he won’t be issued a social security number or be eligible for a passport.
