Key is the Paschal Full Moon, the first full moon of the Spring Equinox, which fell on March 20 this year. Both Easter and Passover follow a schedule that aligns with the moon’s phases and the sun’s position in the sky, known as the lunisolar calendar.

Determining EasterThe Christian holiday must fall from March 22 to April 25 on the Gregorian calendar, which is out of sync with the lunar calendar. The holiday then falls on the first Sunday after the Paschal Full Moon between those dates. In 2022, the first full moon will occur on April 16. The following Sunday is the next day, April 17.

Eastern Orthodox churches follow the solar Julian calendar, which typically means that the holiday falls behind the Christian holiday. This year, the holiday will fall on April 24, seven full days later. The next time both Easters fall on the same date is 2025, on April 20.Passover, also known as Pesach, falls from April 15 to April 23 this year.

This also happens to be a Jewish leap year. Leap years are built into the lunar calendar because the lunar year is about 11 days shorter than the solar year, so an extra month is added to certain years to make up the difference. Seven leap years will happen in a 19-year cycle, and it can cause the festival to start after the second full moon, as in 2016.
