As of late Thursday afternoon, the list of Republican candidates who had filed with the Utah Elections Office included former Utah House Speaker Greg Hughes, Republican national committeeman for Utah Bruce Hough, and former Utah lawmaker and U.S. Senate candidate Becky Edwards. January Walker, who unsuccessfully ran against Rep. Burgess Owens last year, has filed as a United Utah Party candidate.
Other politicians who had been considering running for the seat – including Sen. Dan McCay and Salt Lake County Councilmember Aimee Winder Newton – ultimately opted not to get into the race.is resigning effective September 15On Tuesday, Cox issued a proclamation calling for a special election and outlining the timeline for that. According to the governor's office, the primary election to fill Stewart's seat — and for municipal races — will take place September 5.
The governor has also called the Utah Legislature into special session next Wednesday, June 14, at 4 p.m. to formalize the new election dates and appropriate money for them.Other candidates are expected to enter the special election to replace Stewart. The filing deadline is next Wednesday, June 14 at 5 p.m.
