Here’s what Texas voters agree on | Opinion

Retired teacher Richard Cronshey of San Marcos watched from the second floor of the rotunda during the Texas Public Education Rally on March 11, 2019 at the Texas Capitol in Austin. According to a new poll from Texas 2036, nearly 8 in 10 Texas voters support across-the-board pay raises for teachers going into the next session.Texas voters are increasingly concerned about the state’s future — and they are hungry for solutions on the issues that will shape it.

But the poll also points to the way forward, through bold actions and smart investments that will strengthen Texas’ future in education and workforce development, public safety, and infrastructure. On public safety, most voiced trust in their local law enforcement, and strong majorities support policies that increase transparency around police department hiring and training. More than 8 in 10 voters said it would increase their confidence in law enforcement if lawmakers made it harder to rehire law enforcement officers who were previously fired for poor conduct, with nearly 6 in 10 saying it would increase their confidence “a lot.

This poll makes clear that Texans are remarkably aligned on the challenges our state faces – and the best ways to address them. And the Legislature has sufficient resources to make transformative investments that will help generations of Texans build their own thriving communities and economy.
