So far no evidence has shown offshore wind work caused the whale deaths, NOAA officials said.
Two other whales washed up in New York, one in Virginia and another one in Maryland.
“We are still in the process of trying to compare this six-week period with others in the past. We do typically get humpback whale strandings in the winter months in the mid-Atlantic especially,” said Sarah Wilkin, coordinator of NOAA’s Marine Mammal Health and Stranding Response Program. “But we’re still working on the data to try and determine if it was elevated, and if so how significantly.”
As state and federal officials investigate the cause of death for the series of whales, NOAA said it continues to look at how whale migration, vessel traffic and climate change could factor in. The companies that have pre-planned for offshore wind turbines in and around New Jersey, including Denmark-based energy company, Ørsted, say accounting for whale migration has always been part of pre-construction work for turbines.
