The annual Orchids and Onions competition is back for its 47th year to award prizes for the best and worst projects.
San Diego's beloved architecture competition — Orchids and Onions — is back with awards for the best new buildings and projects, as well as demerits for designs that missed the mark. The 47-year-old competition is rare among architecture competitions, and most professional organizations, in that it gives trophies for bad projects. Perhaps because of that, Orchids and Onions tends to be more closely watched than similar awards.
Judges’ comments: “There was a very in-depth public process around the original design and all those intentions are being wiped away by all the successive actions and design interventions. It's been a slow, painful death. We want our Orchids back.” 2829 Juan St., San Diego. Owner/developer: California State Parks; project architect/designer: State Parks' Southern Service Center.
