It was difficult to make these changes at first. I had to shift my mindset from “I’m being deprived” to “this is a healthy option.” I learned to see food as fuel for my body, and my running was better if I had good fuel. When I ate healthy, I was able to run faster, lose more weight, and feel better; when I ate junk, my runs became junk. The more weight I lost, the longer I could run, and the more I wanted to run., but I was nervous I wouldn’t finish.
As I made my way down the course, I caught up with my son who was walking. He needed encouragement, so I said to him, “Come on. If this old lady is running, you can too!” As we neared the finish, he took off again without me, but the flood of emotions I felt when I crossed the line became so addicting and exciting that I knew I was going to keep running.and countless 5Ks and 10Ks, and I weigh 158 pounds now. To put that into perspective, I wore a size 22 dress at my heaviest.
