‘Helping us stay sane:’ Kids push brooms amid janitor shortage at San Antonio’s North East ISD

Kate Kuper sweeps a classroom at MacArthur High School on Thursday, part of a program that helps keep the school clean — now a necessity rather than a good will gesture, because of a severe custodian shortage throughout NEISD. Each afternoon around 15 students sweep and change trash bags, saving hours of work for two custodians.

With that short daily investment of time, the students have come to appreciate a job that takes long hours — and this year, custodians really need the help. But students were “throwing out trash, or wiping desks or tables,” and so many asked to help that she had to order extra brooms. Some even told Cabrera it was fun. Many became much more aware of the mess they make on a daily basis.“These students are all coming at the end of the day, running back into my room, from orchestra, baseball, soccer, theater,” he said. “Then, once they finish working with us for 20-25 minutes, they’re going back to their other extracurriculars.

The district has the most trouble staffing janitors at campuses outside Loop 1604, where gas prices affect long commutes, and weeks ago offered a relocation stipend of $100 a month for those willing to work at any of 17 schools in that area, so far without much response, said Barry Lanford, the NEISD executive director for facility maintenance and operations.

It’s the same at Hill. If evening custodians don’t finish all the bathrooms or classrooms by the time they leave, Cabrera will do it herself the next morning before students arrive.“We are working twice as hard, because we have less people,” Cabrera recalled saying to her bosses.
